Empowering Women in Agriculture: UNDP Launches Call for Proposals in Haiti

Dated: October 16, 2024

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has announced a call for proposals aimed at empowering rural women in Haiti, particularly focusing on the beekeeping sector. This initiative seeks to enhance women’s roles in agriculture, improve food security, and promote economic independence through targeted funding and support.

Key Takeaways

  • Deadline for Proposals: October 30, 2024
  • Funding Range: $150,000 to $170,000
  • Target Areas: Sud, Nippes, and Grande Anse departments
  • Focus: Strengthening women’s associations involved in beekeeping

Objectives of the Program

The program is designed to achieve three main objectives:

  1. Role of Rural Women: Enhance the contribution of rural women to food security, nutrition, and climate change mitigation.
  2. Institutional Strengthening: Improve the institutional framework to support gender-responsive initiatives, emphasizing women’s leadership.
  3. Income Generating Activities: Promote economic empowerment through beekeeping, providing women with sustainable income sources.

Priorities for Action

The initiative outlines six priority areas to guide its implementation:

  • Develop Women’s Voice: Encourage leadership and participation among women in rural communities.
  • Eliminate Violence: Address and reduce violence against women and girls.
  • Strengthen Peace and Security: Support the implementation of the women’s peace and security agenda.
  • Increase Economic Autonomy: Foster economic independence for women.
  • Integrate Gender Equality: Ensure gender equality is central to national plans and budgets.
  • Implement Global Norms: Align local actions with international standards on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Funding Information

The program will allocate between $150,000 and $170,000 to successful proposals. This funding aims to support women’s associations in enhancing their beekeeping skills and developing the beekeeping value chain.

Target Audience

The call for proposals specifically targets women’s associations in the following departments:

  • Sud
  • Nippes
  • Grande Anse

These associations should be interested in beekeeping and committed to strengthening their capacities in this area.

Expected Results

The program anticipates several key outcomes:

  • Skill Development: Strengthening the beekeeping skills of at least 10 women’s associations.
  • Value Chain Development: Establishing a robust beekeeping value chain within these associations.
  • Economic Empowerment: Enabling members to produce and sell honey and related products, thereby enhancing their economic status.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this call for proposals, organizations must meet the following criteria:

  • Not be listed by the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee.
  • Be a legal entity authorized to operate in Haiti.
  • Have a non-profit motive.
  • Hold a valid authorization to work in Haiti from a competent institution.
  • Demonstrate programming experience in the relevant area over the past three years.
  • Be directly responsible for the preparation and management of the proposed action.
  • Provide proof of management experience for at least 60% of the requested funding amount.

This initiative by the UNDP represents a significant step towards empowering women in agriculture in Haiti, particularly in the beekeeping sector, and aims to create sustainable economic opportunities for rural women.
