The Government of Canada is providing $2.14 million in federal support to the Okanagan Indian Band through the Crime Prevention Action Fund to strengthen youth crime prevention initiatives. This funding will support a community-led program for Indigenous youth aged 14 to 25, focusing on building confidence, leadership, and connection through culturally grounded activities based on syilx teachings, values, and land-based learning.
The initiative offers opportunities for youth to learn from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, access healing and wellness resources, develop leadership skills, and engage in arts-based cultural expression. It also aims to bring the community together to develop safety protocols, strengthen cultural ties, and share resources, promoting overall wellness, identity, and belonging.
Part of the National Crime Prevention Strategy, the Crime Prevention Action Fund supports evidence-based programs that address risk and protective factors associated with crime among vulnerable populations, with a particular focus on reducing youth involvement in violent crime and enhancing community resilience for Indigenous communities.
