The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has launched its first-ever Amazonia Bond, raising $100 million to finance sustainable development initiatives across the Amazon region. This milestone marks a breakthrough in mobilizing private capital for environmental protection and community empowerment, aligning financial innovation with the preservation of one of the world’s most critical ecosystems.
Structured under the Amazonia Bond Issuance Guidelines, co-developed by the IDB and the World Bank, the issuance adheres to high standards of transparency, accountability, and impact measurement. Managed by Crédit Agricole CIB, the five-year fixed-rate bond, which carries an annual coupon of 3.802%, is part of the $1 billion Amazonia Bond Program. Proceeds will be directed toward projects that enhance local livelihoods, strengthen economic resilience, promote sustainable forest management, and conserve biodiversity.
Following the IDB’s leadership, the National Treasury of Brazil has expressed support for the initiative and signaled plans to explore the issuance of its own Amazon Bonds under the same framework, in partnership with the IDB and the World Bank. IDB Group President Ilan Goldfajn emphasized that the Amazonia Bond marks a “new chapter in sustainable finance,” offering a model to channel global investment into nature-based solutions that benefit both people and the planet.
This initiative builds on the strategic collaboration between the IDB and the World Bank, announced earlier this year, to help countries and institutions launch similar bond programs. The Amazonia Bond Program forms part of Amazonia Forever, the IDB Group’s regional coordination platform for conservation and sustainable development in the Amazon, with support from Spain, Germany, and the Green Climate Fund.
At COP30, the IDB Group is showcasing its leadership in sustainable finance through more than 80 events focused on closing development financing gaps in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Bank aims to mobilize at least $6 billion in financing commitments, bridging the public and private sectors to support national development priorities.
Amazonia Forever remains the IDB’s flagship initiative for protecting biodiversity and accelerating sustainable growth across the eight Amazon countries. Its approach focuses on innovative financing, knowledge-sharing, and regional coordination, reinforcing the global call to align financial systems with environmental stewardship and inclusive progress.
