An innovative automated water system in Ethiopia is changing the lives of communities by making clean water more accessible, reliable and sustainable. Introduced by Action Against Hunger in Mormora Kebele, Moyale Woreda, the smart water solution is helping families save time, improve health and strengthen community ownership of water resources.
For years, Loko Miyo spent around six hours walking to collect a single 20-litre jerrycan of water from a polluted river. The difficult journey often involved carrying heavy containers over rocky roads, while unsafe water exposed her children to repeated cases of diarrhea and other waterborne illnesses.
The situation changed after Action Against Hunger, with funding from Global Affairs Canada, established an automated water point closer to the community. Located just 15 minutes from Loko’s home, the facility allows residents to access clean water around the clock using a simple ATM card system.
The technology enables users to collect only the amount of water they need while automatically recording water usage and payments. Fees collected through the system are deposited into a community-managed bank account, helping fund maintenance and ensuring the facility remains operational over the long term.
Despite having limited formal education, Loko quickly learned how to use the system after receiving training from the project team. The easy-to-operate technology has allowed her to collect more water in less time, giving her additional hours to care for her family, prepare meals, wash clothes and maintain her vegetable garden.
The availability of clean water has also improved family health by reducing reliance on unsafe sources. Loko’s children are now able to drink safer water, helping protect them from water-related illnesses.
The project has also encouraged stronger community involvement. Local residents have taken responsibility for protecting and maintaining the water point, viewing the facility as an important community asset.
Moyale Woreda’s Water and Energy Office has supported the initiative and highlighted its role in improving water management, accountability and long-term sustainability. The local authority is exploring opportunities to expand the automated water system to other communities in the region.
Since becoming operational in December 2025, the smart water point has provided reliable clean water access to around 1,500 people in Mormora Kebele. The success of the project demonstrates how technology and community participation can help create sustainable solutions to water challenges.
For Loko, the ATM card represents more than a tool for collecting water. It represents improved health, saved time and a better future for her family and community.
