Organisations and businesses in England can now apply for a share of £1 million in funding to support innovative initiatives that encourage walking, wheeling, and cycling. The Active Travel Innovation Fund, announced by Active Travel England (ATE) on 6 October 2025, offers grants of up to £100,000 per successful project. The funding targets small to medium-sized businesses and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) seeking to develop new projects or expand existing initiatives that promote active travel in communities.
The fund is designed to support projects that can make a tangible difference, such as community schemes targeting under-represented groups, partnerships between councils and local businesses, or digital tools that improve safety and accessibility for walkers, cyclists, and wheeled users. By backing creative and ambitious ideas, the initiative forms part of the government’s Plan for Change, which aims to boost economic growth while promoting healthier and more sustainable travel options.
Chris Boardman, National Active Travel Commissioner, highlighted that the fund will turn innovative ideas into real improvements for active travel, improving national health outcomes and supporting long-term behavioural change. Minister for Local Transport, Lilian Greenwood, emphasized the physical and mental health benefits of walking, wheeling, and cycling, noting that the £1 million funding will make these healthier travel options easier and safer for people across the country.
Successful applicants will not only receive financial support but also practical guidance from ATE and the Government Grant Managed Service (GGMS), including help with building partnerships, engaging stakeholders, and measuring project impact. Each funded project will run for 12 months, followed by an evaluation process where organisations share case studies and reports detailing outcomes.
The Active Travel Innovation Fund complements previous government investment, including a £300 million package announced in February 2025 to improve local walking and cycling infrastructure, provide cycle training for children, and support community initiatives. By fostering a network of partners and promoting innovative solutions, the fund aims to reduce congestion, improve public health, strengthen local economies, and create a sustainable, connected active travel network across England.
