The Trump administration is reportedly set to halt federal funding for American and foreign organizations that support gender identity or diversity initiatives overseas, according to Politico. The policy is expected to cut off US funding to entities promoting “diversity, equity, and inclusion” and transgender programs, which the administration claims conflict with its interpretation of women’s rights and racial fairness.
The move is being treated as an expansion of the Mexico City Policy, a Republican-era initiative that prohibits overseas recipients of US health dollars from providing or promoting abortion services, even if funded from other sources. Under the new restrictions, the ban would extend beyond health services to cover non-profits, foreign governments, and United Nations programs engaged in diversity or transgender work.
A senior State Department official told Reuters that the agency “continues to advance President Trump’s American First foreign policy” and plans to “close loopholes that allowed taxpayer funding for promotion of abortion in previous iterations of the Mexico City Policy, while expanding the policy to ensure every penny of US foreign assistance prioritizes American values, not the woke agenda.”
Two organizations, the Global Health Council and MSI Reproductive Choices, have reportedly been informed of the policy change. Neither organization immediately responded to requests for comment.
