FundsChain is a blockchain-based platform developed by the World Bank to enhance traceability, accountability, and efficiency in tracking the use of project funds. The platform offers tamper-proof digital records, end-to-end tracking of transactions, and immediate access for project partners, streamlining financial management and operations across diverse systems that are often non-standardized and disconnected.
By using blockchain technology, FundsChain tracks every dollar on a secure and immutable digital ledger accessible to all stakeholders. This broader access to up-to-date transaction records improves transparency, reduces duplication, and empowers teams to make timely, informed decisions. The World Bank is the first multilateral development institution to implement blockchain for project oversight, positioning itself as a leader in future-ready financial management.
FundsChain has already been tested in 13 projects across 10 countries and is expected to scale to approximately 250 projects in developing countries by June 2026. Early adopters include the Philippines, where the platform was implemented for the $500 million Metro Manila Flood Management Project to enhance infrastructure and reduce flood vulnerability, and Bangladesh, where it supports the $600 million Bangladesh Resilience, Entrepreneurship, and Livelihood Improvement Project benefiting over 115,000 people in 3,200 villages.
The platform has significantly improved financial reporting and project management. It allows instant tracking of payments, contracts, and expenses, notifies suppliers when payments are ready, and integrates with existing systems like the Loan Management System in Bangladesh. This digitization benefits both project beneficiaries and finance teams by simplifying transaction records and enabling comprehensive data analysis.
FundsChain leverages technologies such as cryptography, distributed ledgers, and Hyperledger Besu to provide a secure, permanent, and transparent record of all project transactions. Development partners can track funds throughout the project lifecycle and generate detailed execution reports, supporting robust monitoring and evaluation.
The platform has received international recognition for innovation, winning the Most Exciting Public Sector Innovation Project award in 2025 and being featured in Citi’s Global Perspective and Solutions report for modernizing financial systems. As FundsChain continues to expand, it aims to ensure development financing is faster, more transparent, and capable of delivering better outcomes for people and the planet.
