As global conflicts continue to dominate headlines, the United Nations is highlighting the often-overlooked work of peacebuilding through the UN Peacebuilding Fund (PBF), which has spent the last two decades helping countries prevent violence, recover from conflict, and build lasting peace.
Established in 2005 by UN Member States, the Peacebuilding Fund serves as the UN’s primary financing mechanism for peace initiatives. Designed to respond quickly during critical moments, the fund provides flexible support to countries facing conflict risks or emerging from periods of instability.
Over the past 20 years, the fund has invested more than $2 billion in over 1,150 peacebuilding projects across more than 75 countries and territories. Its initiatives have supported political transitions, strengthened local institutions, promoted dialogue between divided communities, created economic opportunities, and empowered women and young people to take leadership roles in peacebuilding efforts.
The fund works closely with governments, civil society organizations, community groups, youth networks, and more than 20 UN agencies to address the root causes of conflict and foster long-term stability. Its beneficiaries include communities rebuilding after war, families seeking security, and individuals working to create peaceful futures.
The Peacebuilding Fund has contributed to significant achievements around the world. In countries such as Sierra Leone, Papua New Guinea, Guatemala, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, its support has helped strengthen institutions, facilitate peaceful political processes, support justice initiatives, and promote community resilience.
A key focus of the fund has been investing in women-led peacebuilding initiatives. By supporting women mediators, negotiators, and grassroots organizations, the fund has helped thousands of women play active roles in conflict prevention and peacebuilding at local and national levels.
As demand for conflict prevention and peacebuilding support continues to grow, the UN emphasizes that investing in peace remains one of the most effective and cost-efficient ways to reduce instability and human suffering. The Peacebuilding Fund’s 20-year legacy demonstrates that proactive investments in peace can help communities avoid violence and create opportunities for sustainable development.
While its work may not always attract widespread attention, the Peacebuilding Fund continues to play a critical role in helping countries build stronger, more peaceful, and more resilient societies around the world.
