The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has strengthened its partnership with Bulgaria with the launch of a new technology hub in Sofia. The initiative aims to expand the bank’s operations, support digital innovation, and bring its services closer to clients and partners across the region.
The new Tech Sofia centre was opened as part of the EBRD’s broader strategy to decentralise its activities and increase its local presence. The hub will recruit more than 100 technology professionals, building on Bulgaria’s established technology sector and strengthening Sofia’s position as a regional innovation centre.
The facility is expected to support the EBRD’s digital operations while creating new opportunities for technology specialists in areas such as software development, digital services, and innovation. More than 50 professionals have already joined the team, with further expansion planned.
EBRD officials said the new hub reflects the bank’s commitment to working more closely with local businesses, governments, and communities. By increasing its presence in Bulgaria, the institution aims to improve its ability to deliver investment and development projects where they are needed most.
The EBRD has been an important investor in Bulgaria for decades, supporting projects focused on sustainable infrastructure, private sector growth, financial markets, and the country’s green transition. The bank has invested more than €5 billion in hundreds of projects since beginning operations in Bulgaria in 1991.
The launch of Tech Sofia highlights Bulgaria’s growing role in Europe’s technology landscape and reinforces cooperation between the country and the EBRD. The new centre is expected to contribute to innovation, competitiveness, and long-term economic development.
