The United Nations Development Programme, with support from the Government of Germany through KfW Development Bank and in partnership with the Government of Balochistan, has handed over climate-resilient houses to families affected by the 2022 floods in Hanna-Urak, Quetta District.
The handover marks a key milestone under the Flood Reconstruction and Coordination Programme, through which UNDP is supporting the construction of 700 climate and disaster-resilient houses in Balochistan. The initiative aims to provide safe shelter for flood-affected families while reducing their vulnerability to future climate and disaster risks.
The newly constructed houses have been designed with flood-resilient, seismic-resistant and climate-adaptive features. For families who lost their homes during the 2022 floods, the houses offer not only safer living conditions but also renewed dignity, stability and hope for the future.
The handover ceremony brought together representatives from the Government of Germany, UNDP Pakistan, the Government of Balochistan, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority and local communities. Officials highlighted the importance of partnership in helping vulnerable communities recover from disaster while building stronger foundations for long-term resilience.
Germany reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Pakistan’s recovery and resilience efforts, noting that the programme combines immediate reconstruction with support for stronger institutions. The Government of Balochistan also emphasized that collaboration between government, development partners and communities is essential to address the province’s development and recovery challenges.
UNDP Pakistan stated that recovery must go beyond replacing what was lost. The organization emphasized that reconstruction should reduce future risks, protect development gains and create stronger conditions for communities to thrive.
The initiative reflects a broader shift from short-term post-flood assistance to risk-informed and partnership-driven recovery. By investing in resilient housing, the programme aims to protect lives, strengthen communities and support sustainable development in Balochistan.
