The Government of Zambia, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme and with support from the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency, has commissioned new road and bridge infrastructure in the Mayukwayukwa Resettlement Scheme in Kaoma District, Western Province.
The infrastructure was developed under the Development of Basic Infrastructure Project and includes a 25-kilometre gravel road network and a 120-metre footbridge. The project aims to improve access to health care, education, markets and other essential services for displaced persons and host communities.
The initiative is valued at US$5.3 million and is expected to benefit more than 42,000 people across Mayukwayukwa and Meheba. It supports Zambia’s broader goal of building inclusive, productive and economically resilient resettlement schemes.
Speaking on behalf of Vice President Dr. W.K. Mutale-Nalumango, Permanent Secretary for the Resettlement Division Ms. Mavis Nkomeshya said the project represents a turning point for displaced persons and host communities. She noted that improved roads and bridges can help families reach clinics, schools and markets more safely and reliably.
The Government of Japan reaffirmed its commitment to supporting humanitarian and development efforts through the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus approach. This approach focuses on easing pressure on host communities, strengthening self-reliance and supporting conditions for safe and dignified solutions for displaced persons.
JICA highlighted that the infrastructure is part of a broader effort to connect physical development with human development. The project is linked to JICA’s HOPE 2 programme, which supports local planning, livelihoods and community resilience.
UNDP emphasized the role of infrastructure as a foundation for inclusive development. Improved roads and bridges are expected to reduce isolation, expand economic opportunities, strengthen livelihoods and improve access to basic services for vulnerable communities.
The Development of Basic Infrastructure Project will continue with additional investments, including the construction of a secondary school, rehabilitation of health facilities and development of irrigation schemes. These investments are expected to further strengthen food security, livelihoods and community resilience in Meheba and Mayukwayukwa.
The Government of Zambia, the Government of Japan, JICA and UNDP reaffirmed their shared commitment to sustainable development, resilience building and improving the quality of life for displaced persons and host communities across Zambia.
