The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bangladesh is rethinking how communication is used in development projects, shifting its focus from visibility-driven messaging to strategic communication designed to influence policy, strengthen engagement, and improve long-term development outcomes.
At a strategic communications workshop held on June 8, 2026, in Dhaka, UNDP Bangladesh brought together communications professionals and project teams to explore how communication can be integrated into project design from the outset rather than treated as a final reporting step. The initiative reflects a growing recognition that communication plays a central role in shaping development impact.
UNDP Bangladesh Resident Representative Stefan Liller emphasized that communication should be embedded throughout all stages of development work, arguing that without effective communication, development results risk going unseen and underutilized. The workshop encouraged participants to rethink traditional approaches that focus mainly on press releases and social media updates, and instead adopt strategies that highlight long-term change and measurable impact.
Participants discussed how stronger communication planning can improve stakeholder engagement, resource mobilization, and accountability while also helping connect development outcomes more directly with communities. Project leaders highlighted the importance of documenting results beyond project timelines to capture lasting social and economic effects.
The workshop also included training sessions on presentation skills, media engagement, and the use of artificial intelligence in communication workflows. Experts advised participants to prioritize storytelling that demonstrates change rather than simply reporting activities, noting that impactful narratives are more likely to influence public understanding and policy discussions.
Speakers also highlighted the growing role of AI tools in communications, while stressing that human judgment, creativity, and relationship-building remain essential in maintaining trust and relevance in development messaging.
UNDP Bangladesh leadership concluded that an integrated communication approach across projects is more effective than isolated messaging efforts. The organization said that strengthening strategic communication will help ensure development outcomes are better understood, more widely shared, and more effectively translated into meaningful social impact across the country.
