The Government of India and the Bihar government are launching new initiatives to strengthen inland fisheries development, including an Integrated Aqua Park in Bhojpur and a regional centre of the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) in Patna. The projects, backed by an investment of ₹31.21 crore, aim to modernise aquaculture practices, improve fish production and support fish farmers across Bihar and eastern India.
The foundation stone for the Integrated Aqua Park will be laid at the Bansaur Fish Seed Farm in Bhojpur under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. The facility will bring together advanced aquaculture infrastructure, research facilities and training programmes to promote sustainable fisheries growth.
The aqua park will include modern systems such as fish hatcheries, biofloc technology units, recirculating aquaculture systems, fish feed production facilities and water quality testing laboratories. The centre will also provide training opportunities to help fish farmers adopt improved technologies and increase productivity.
Bihar has significant potential for inland fisheries due to its extensive network of ponds, reservoirs, wetlands, rivers and canals. The development of new fisheries infrastructure is expected to improve fish seed availability, encourage scientific farming methods and create new opportunities for rural communities.
The new NFDB regional centre in Patna will serve as a key institution for fisheries development in Bihar and neighbouring regions. It will support coordination between government programmes, technology providers and local stakeholders while promoting modern aquaculture techniques and skill development.
Over the years, investments under fisheries development schemes have helped Bihar expand its fish production capacity. The state has become one of India’s leading inland fish producers, supplying fish to neighbouring regions and strengthening its role in the country’s growing blue economy.
The Integrated Aqua Park and NFDB regional centre are expected to create a stronger fisheries ecosystem by combining infrastructure, innovation and farmer support. The initiatives aim to increase employment, improve incomes and build a more resilient aquaculture sector in Bihar.
