Dublin — June 3, 2026 — Ireland’s Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has welcomed the European Union’s decision to officially begin accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, calling it a historic milestone that signals both countries’ future within the EU family.
McEntee praised the determination of the Ukrainian and Moldovan people, noting their commitment to reform under extraordinary circumstances. “Their progress reflects a deep commitment to democracy, the rule of law and the values that underpin our Union,” she said.
The Minister highlighted Ireland’s role as an incoming Presidency of the Council and as a member state that participated in the EU’s first enlargement, underscoring the renewed momentum and unity within the Union.
“I warmly congratulate the people of Ukraine and Moldova on reaching this important stage and commend my EU colleagues for the unity, leadership and confidence they have shown as we move forward together,” McEntee added.
This decision marks a significant step in the EU’s enlargement process, reinforcing the Union’s commitment to supporting democratic reforms and strengthening ties with Eastern Europe
