The Northern Ireland Executive has announced increased funding support for Féile an Phobail’s August Féile 2026, strengthening one of the region’s largest community arts and cultural festivals and reinforcing its role in tourism and economic development.
The support, delivered through Tourism Northern Ireland, represents a 13% increase in investment as part of the International Tourism Events Fund 2026–27, which backs major events that attract international visitors and generate significant media exposure.
The festival, known as August Féile, will run from 24 July to 9 August 2026 and is expected to feature more than 600 events across 50 venues in west Belfast and surrounding areas. The programme includes music, theatre, debates, exhibitions, comedy, sports, and community-led cultural activities.
The initiative is supported by Tourism Northern Ireland, which aims to strengthen the region’s profile as a cultural destination and boost visitor numbers through major events.
Government officials highlighted the festival’s importance in driving tourism revenue, supporting local businesses, and encouraging longer visitor stays. The event is also expected to contribute to wider seasonal tourism activity linked to other major cultural celebrations across Belfast.
Organisers estimate that the festival could generate approximately £1.8 million for the local economy and attract over 110,000 visitors, with a significant share coming from outside Northern Ireland.
Festival leadership emphasized that the programme continues to grow in scale and ambition, showcasing local creativity and cultural identity while providing an authentic visitor experience. The event is also positioned as part of a broader summer tourism strategy that includes other major cultural festivals in the region.
Overall, the funding increase reflects a continued policy focus on using cultural events as drivers of tourism, economic activity, and international visibility for Northern Ireland’s creative industries and communities.
