Wellington — May 28, 2026 — Associate Education Minister David Seymour has announced that financial relief for early childhood education (ECE) services will be delivered in July 2026, six months earlier than planned.
Most ECE services will receive a 1.5 percent increase in subsidy rates, providing the sector with an additional $40 million annually. Traditionally, such increases are paid out in January, but this year the government has accelerated the timeline to ease cost pressures.
Mr. Seymour emphasized that affordable, high‑quality ECE is vital for Kiwi families and that rising costs should not force services to either pass expenses onto parents or cut essential features. “ECE in New Zealand should be affordable, high quality, and accessible. New Zealand’s future relies on it,” he said.
The announcement follows the ECE Sector Review, which introduced 15 regulatory changes to reduce compliance costs while maintaining children’s safety. These reforms include simplifying licensing criteria, moving regulatory oversight to the Education Review Office (ERO), and introducing graduated enforcement tools to better manage minor breaches.
Alongside these measures, the government’s FamilyBoost programme has already supported more than 92,000 families with up to $120 per week toward ECE costs.
The early funding boost and regulatory reforms reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening the ECE sector, ensuring more choice, better access, and improved affordability for parents across New Zealand.
