Algiers — May 27, 2026 — Turkish industrial group SPA Özmert Algeria is preparing a large‑scale agro‑industrial project in Naâma Province to strengthen Algeria’s livestock feed supply. The initiative, currently under government review, aims to reduce import dependence and boost domestic forage production.
Covering 22,000 hectares, the project will focus on cultivating barley, triticale, sorghum, silage maize, and other forage crops adapted to Algeria’s semi‑arid climate. Plans include deploying 80 center‑pivot irrigation systems, each connected to boreholes, to optimize water use and ensure sustainable production.
The investment also envisions storage infrastructure such as grain silos and strategic reserves to secure feed supplies during drought periods. According to preliminary estimates, the project could generate more than 500 direct and indirect jobs, while supporting agricultural mechanization, logistics, and maintenance services in the region.
Algeria currently imports nearly 40% of its barley needs, with most of it used for livestock feed. Between 2021 and 2025, the country imported an average of 573,337 metric tons annually, peaking at 867,579 tons in 2024. The new project is expected to help reduce this reliance on imports and strengthen the cattle and dairy industries.
By expanding domestic forage production, SPA Özmert’s initiative aligns with Algeria’s strategic agricultural investment framework and reflects growing demand for sustainable solutions in the animal feed sector.
