The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that off-site power has been restored to Unit 3 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the UAE after a fire at an electrical generator caused by an attack. Director-General Rafael Grossi welcomed the restoration, noting that the reactor no longer relies on emergency diesel generators, which is a critical step for nuclear safety.
The incident unfolded against the backdrop of escalating conflict in the Middle East, following US and Israeli strikes against Iran and subsequent counterstrikes across the Gulf region. The Barakah plant, which supplies roughly a quarter of the UAE’s energy needs, was directly affected, raising concerns about the vulnerability of civilian infrastructure during military activity. Grossi reiterated that nuclear sites must never be targeted, stressing their importance for safety and stability.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep alarm over the drone strikes, warning that the incident underscores the urgent need to halt fighting in the region. He emphasized that attacks on nuclear installations are unacceptable, violate international law, and must be condemned. Guterres urged all parties to avoid further escalation and ensure civilian infrastructure, including nuclear facilities, remains protected.
