Ontario is investing $35 million to support the expansion of the Art Gallery of Ontario, reinforcing its commitment to preserving cultural heritage and strengthening the province’s tourism sector. The funding will contribute to the development of the Dani Reiss Modern and Contemporary Gallery, a major project aimed at enhancing the gallery’s capacity to showcase both Canadian and international art.
The expansion will add at least 13 new galleries across five floors, significantly increasing exhibition space and enabling the institution to present a broader range of artistic works. With an additional 40,000 square feet of space, the project will boost the gallery’s display capacity by approximately 30 percent, allowing for more dynamic and flexible exhibitions.
Designed to accommodate diverse programming needs, the new gallery spaces will feature adaptable layouts, including large open areas and smaller, more intimate settings. This flexibility will support a wide variety of exhibitions and enhance the visitor experience, positioning the gallery as a leading cultural destination.
The project is expected to increase annual attendance by up to 120,000 visitors, contributing to Ontario’s growing tourism industry. In addition to cultural benefits, the expansion is projected to generate significant economic impact, supporting hundreds of jobs and contributing to provincial economic growth.
Construction is scheduled for completion by Fall 2027, with funding from provincial, federal and private sources working together to realize the project. Overall, the investment highlights Ontario’s strategy to strengthen its cultural institutions while driving economic development and attracting visitors from around the world.
