The Co-op store in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, located on Front Street, has reopened following a four-week investment programme aimed at transforming the outlet and improving the shopping experience for the local community and visitors. The store operates daily from 7am to 10pm and supports 14 local jobs, with additional seasonal recruitment expected during the summer period.
As part of the refurbishment, the store has been updated with new refrigeration systems to reduce energy consumption while expanding the range of fresh and chilled products. The in-store bakery has been extended, and a new Costa Coffee Express machine has been introduced offering both hot and chilled drinks. The store also continues to provide a wide selection of everyday essentials, including meal deals, ready meals, fresh produce, and Co-op’s new Mexican-inspired range, alongside Fairtrade products and household items.
Additional services have been added to improve convenience for customers, including an InPost Locker as well as parcel collection options through Amazon and DPD. The store also offers online grocery delivery via platforms such as Just Eat and Uber Eats, where orders are picked locally and delivered quickly within the community. Payment services through PayPoint are also available.
The refurbishment also brings enhanced member benefits, including special pricing on selected products and promotional deals across the store. Co-op members can access additional savings on commonly purchased items, reinforcing value for regular shoppers.
Co-op area manager Gary Colpitts highlighted the organisation’s commitment to supporting local communities and high streets, noting that the upgraded store is designed to serve as a convenient community hub. He also thanked residents for their support during the temporary pop-up shop that operated while the refurbishment work was underway.
The Co-op continues to support British agriculture, with all fresh and frozen meat sourced from British farms. The store also provides soft plastic recycling facilities, allowing customers to return items such as crisp packets, bread bags, and food wrappers that are not typically accepted in household recycling systems.
As one of the world’s largest consumer-owned cooperatives, Co-op, which has been operating for over 180 years, remains focused on delivering value to its more than seven million members while continuing to invest in local communities and services.
