Fish farmers in Georgia have strengthened their knowledge of food safety and aquatic animal health through a five-day training organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations under the ENPARD IV programme, with support from the European Union and Sweden. The initiative brought together over 40 aquaculture producers and sector stakeholders to promote good aquaculture practices aligned with international standards.
As Georgia’s aquaculture sector continues to grow, improving food safety and disease prevention has become increasingly important for public health and market access. The training focused on practical, field-based learning to enhance participants’ skills in biosecurity, hazard management, and outbreak response. It also introduced digital tools such as the National Animal Identification and Traceability System and farm management systems to improve traceability and decision-making.
A key component of the programme was hands-on field training, where participants applied biosecurity measures and safety practices in real farm settings. This approach helped farmers better understand how to manage risks, respond to challenges, and ensure safe and high-quality aquaculture production.
Experts emphasized that aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing global food sectors, making effective health management and biosecurity essential. Strengthening farmers’ practical capacities not only improves product quality but also supports the development of a resilient and competitive aquaculture industry capable of meeting international standards.
The programme is part of broader efforts by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and partners to support Georgia’s agricultural development. Through continued training, technical assistance, and targeted support, these initiatives aim to enhance compliance with global food safety requirements, expand market opportunities, and ensure long-term sustainability in the sector.
