In a significant effort to reshape labour migration narratives and combat forced labour, the International Labour Organization (ILO), in collaboration with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and key partners, held a Regional Adaptation Workshop in Abuja, Nigeria. The workshop focused on localizing the ILO’s Media Toolkit on Reporting Forced Labour and Fair Recruitment for the West African context.
The event, held at the Chelsea Hotel, brought together over 50 participants, including journalists, government officials, trade unions, employers’ organizations, and development partners. It was organized under the FMM West Africa II, FAIR III, and ACTION Project initiatives, with co-funding from the European Union and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
Originally designed for Southern Africa, the toolkit has been adapted to address the specific realities of West African migration. The updated version incorporates ECOWAS Free Movement Protocols, regional legal frameworks, and emerging issues such as reintegration of returnees, climate-induced displacement, and misinformation, aiming to enhance ethical and accurate reporting on labour migration in the region.
