The European Union (EU) has launched the I’ve Got the Power campaign in Kenya to celebrate and promote the strong collaboration between Kenya and the EU for a sustainable and prosperous future. The campaign emphasizes the shared commitment to accessible, reliable clean energy and highlights the transformative impact of EU-supported initiatives that provide renewable energy solutions for individuals and communities across the country.
A key element of the campaign is the EU’s Global Gateway investment strategy, exemplified by the Last Mile Connectivity Programme. This initiative expands electricity access in rural Kenya by connecting households near distribution transformers to the national grid. By delivering cleaner and reliable power to families, schools, and small businesses across 32 counties, the program supports Kenya’s universal electrification goals, reduces reliance on polluting fuels, and fosters improvements in health, education, and local economic opportunities.
European Union Ambassador to Kenya, Henriette Geiger, emphasized that the renewable energy transition is not just about reducing carbon emissions but also about creating a sustainable future for people, local economies, and the environment. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the benefits of sustainable energy while demonstrating its tangible impact on communities.
The campaign showcases real-life examples of renewable energy empowering individuals and communities. Fashion designer Austin benefits from uninterrupted electricity in his workshop, enabling business growth, while Catheline, a boda boda rider, now operates an electric bike for deliveries, earning a stable income. These stories highlight how clean energy enhances livelihoods, public safety, and local entrepreneurship.
Kenya’s clean energy progress is part of a broader African vision led by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa under the Scaling up Renewables in Africa campaign. Despite Africa’s potential to lead the global clean energy transition, millions still lack electricity access. Through the EU’s Global Gateway, the I’ve Got the Power campaign seeks to accelerate access to sustainable energy, create jobs, and drive long-term development across the continent.
