On the eve of the United Nations General Assembly, the Minderoo Foundation has pledged US$1 million (A$1.52 million) to protect frontline aid workers risking their lives in conflict zones. Dr Andrew Forrest AO signed the Declaration for the Protection of Humanitarian Personnel, underscoring the urgent need to safeguard those delivering life-saving assistance in the world’s most dangerous regions.
The pledge follows 2024’s grim record as the deadliest year for humanitarians, with more than 380 aid workers killed—including Australian Lalzawmi “Zomi” Frankcom, who tragically lost her life in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza.
Spearheaded by the Australian government, the declaration calls for stronger global political will to ensure aid workers can operate safely and without obstruction. “These are the brave heroes who risk everything in service of humanity,” said Dr Forrest. “International law protects them, and this declaration reinforces accountability for all parties in conflict. As crises escalate, reform is urgent—we owe it to the 305 million people worldwide in need of humanitarian assistance.”
Minderoo’s initial funding will be deployed in collaboration with fellow signatories to enhance frontline protection. The commitment also signals the start of a series of high-level UNGA events convened by Dr Forrest, aimed at driving reform, accountability, and urgent humanitarian action to protect those who risk their lives for others.
