The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed a €14.7 million contribution from the European Union to support food and cash assistance for people living in Ukraine’s frontline areas. The funding will also sustain essential logistics services for humanitarian organizations operating in the country. According to WFP Deputy Country Director in Ukraine Nanna Skau, the support comes at a crucial time, as resources for humanitarian aid are under strain while attacks near the frontline continue to intensify. This assistance will help families meet their food needs without sacrificing other vital expenses or falling into debt, especially with winter approaching.
The EU’s funding will allow WFP and its partners to deliver food boxes, ready-to-eat rations, and fresh bread to communities most affected by the conflict along Ukraine’s 850-kilometre frontline. In areas where markets remain functional, cash assistance will also be provided to give families more flexibility and choice in meeting their daily needs.
Beyond food relief, the EU continues to support the WFP-led Logistics Cluster, which plays a vital role in coordinating humanitarian convoys to high-risk areas. This includes providing transport, storage, and other logistical services to more than 120 humanitarian organizations across Ukraine.
Highlighting the ongoing hardships faced by families in conflict zones, Marianna Franco, Head of the EU Humanitarian Aid Office in Ukraine, emphasized the EU’s commitment not only to direct food and cash support but also to strengthening logistics that ensure humanitarian access. She noted that the partnership with WFP enables aid delivery under the most difficult conditions, ensuring help reaches those who need it most.
Since 2022, the European Union has contributed more than €130 million to WFP for food and cash assistance in Ukraine, making it one of the programme’s key donors in the country. Thanks to this support and contributions from other donors, WFP continues to assist around 1 million Ukrainians each month, with 90% of aid reaching frontline areas. Nearly all food distributed by WFP is sourced locally, helping sustain Ukraine’s food production and economic recovery.
