The New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) has announced $2.2 million in grants through its National Dance Project (NDP) to support the creation and touring of 20 new dance works across the United States. An additional $200,000 in Finalist Awards will recognize 20 other projects.
Launched in 1996, NDP has become one of the nation’s leading supporters of new dance, connecting artists, cultural organizations, and audiences nationwide. This year’s 20 grantees were selected from a record 306 applications by a panel of 15 advisors, including artists, presenters, producers, and cultural strategists. Notably, 65 percent of awardees are first-time recipients.
Each artist or company will receive funding to create their new work, along with unrestricted support and resources to strengthen production residencies and community engagement. A total of $700,000 is also being set aside to help U.S. nonprofit organizations present these projects through NDP’s Presentation Grant program.
“These 20 new dance projects… offer intentional approaches toward advocacy while navigating grief, upholding ritual, and stewarding resilience,” said Indira Goodwine-Josias, NEFA’s Senior Program Director for Dance.
Since its launch, NDP has invested more than $51.5 million in dance, supporting 820 choreographic works that have toured all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and Guam, reaching more than 3.7 million people in person and virtually.
The 2025 Production Awards are made possible with lead funding from the Doris Duke Foundation and the Mellon Foundation, with additional support from the Aliad Fund at the Boston Foundation.
