The Government of Ireland has approved €35.75 million in funding for the Inis Oírr pier extension project, marking a flagship initiative under the revised €275 billion National Development Plan. The funding enables Galway County Council to proceed with the construction, which includes a concrete pier extension and breakwater designed to improve storm protection and increase berthage space for vessels, particularly during peak tourist seasons.
Galway County Council awarded the €30 million construction contract to Ward & Burke Construction Ltd. following a two-year competitive procurement process. The project is expected to enhance year-round access for island residents and visitors, strengthen transport links, and bolster the resilience and safety of the harbour. On-site construction is slated to begin in spring 2026, following initial design and off-site preparation work.
Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, highlighted that this represents the largest single investment in the offshore islands and Gaeltacht communities by his department since its establishment in 2017. He emphasized that the project will support the local community, provide safer facilities for ferries, and foster long-term development for island residents.
Minister for Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, Jack Chambers TD, noted that the Inis Oírr pier project is the first to be announced following the updated National Development Plan. He underscored the broader benefits of the investment, including job creation during the construction phase, increased economic activity on the island, and support for sustaining the Irish language and local culture.
Galway County Council Chief Executive Liam Conneally welcomed the funding, noting that the project aligns with the council’s strategic objectives to improve connectivity and infrastructure for the islands. County Galway Cathaoirleach Cllr David Collins added that the project demonstrates a strong commitment to the island’s future, supporting both the local community and sustainable tourism for generations to come.
