Waterford Secures €408,469 in Outdoor Recreation Funding to Boost Local Projects

Dated: August 20, 2025

On August 14th, Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, announced €8.7 million in funding for 221 recreational projects across Ireland under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS). The funding, allocated through Measure 1 and the Project Development Measure, reflects the government’s continued commitment to supporting walking trails, cycleways, water-based amenities, and mountain access routes as part of the National Outdoor Recreation Strategy, Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors.

In Waterford, €408,469 has been awarded to support 10 outdoor recreation projects. Applications were submitted by Waterford City and County Council, along with Waterford Leader Partnership CLG, working in collaboration with local community groups and trail management organizations. The projects range from upgrading piers, walking routes, woodland trails, and play areas to enhancing accessibility and biodiversity along existing paths, rerouting historic trails, and developing plans for future recreational sites.

Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Seamus Ryan, welcomed the announcement, highlighting how the funding will strengthen Waterford’s reputation as a leading outdoor destination while promoting health, well-being, and community resilience. He expressed gratitude to council staff, Waterford Leader Partnership, and community groups for their role in securing the funding.

Looking ahead, stakeholders in Waterford are preparing the county’s first Outdoor Recreation Plan, aligned with the national strategy. The newly funded projects will play a central role in implementing this plan, which is set to launch in late 2025, further enhancing outdoor experiences for residents and visitors alike.
