The Canadian government has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the critical minerals sector by announcing a significant investment in New Brunswick. Recognizing the essential role that critical minerals play in modern technologies, clean energy, and national security, Canada aims to strengthen its position as a global leader in the responsible supply of these resources. Through the Global Partnerships Initiative (GPI), the federal government will invest $8.2 million in Northcliff Resources to support the development of its tungsten-molybdenum Sisson Project in New Brunswick.
This funding will go toward updating the feasibility study and engineering design for the Sisson Project, providing critical technical and economic data to guide a final construction decision. The project is considered one of the province’s most promising mining developments, with the potential to generate substantial economic activity and secure a domestic supply of key strategic minerals. Tungsten and molybdenum are vital for high-performance batteries, renewable energy systems, and essential components in defense and aerospace industries.
Federal support for Northcliff’s development aligns with the broader objectives of Canada’s $3.8 billion Critical Minerals Strategy. The strategy focuses on fostering economic growth, enhancing energy security, supporting climate goals, advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, and ensuring inclusive workforce development. Investments like the one in Northcliff help reduce reliance on foreign sources while building robust and resilient supply chains.
Key government leaders, including Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson and Minister Dominic LeBlanc, emphasized the importance of the Sisson Project in driving regional development, creating jobs, and positioning Canada as a reliable global supplier of critical minerals. Northcliff Resources echoed this sentiment, noting that the funding is crucial for advancing a domestic and secure supply of tungsten and molybdenum in North America.
The announcement also highlights Canada’s continued efforts to lead on the global stage in critical mineral supply chains through bilateral cooperation, public-private partnerships, and inclusive community engagement. The Global Partnerships Initiative is a core part of these efforts, ensuring that Canada’s resources contribute to a secure, sustainable, and competitive future.
