The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust (JRCT) supports initiatives that address the root causes of conflict and injustice. Recognizing the essential role of grassroots movements led by directly affected communities, JRCT launched a pilot Grassroots Movements Fund to back such efforts.
Over the past three years, the pilot program awarded £1.5 million through 22 grants to grassroots organizations. While the pilot phase has concluded, JRCT remains committed to supporting grassroots initiatives.
Following external evaluations and internal review, JRCT has decided to discontinue the original structure of the Grassroots Movements Fund. Moving forward, the Trust will allocate £750,000 annually for grassroots support through a specialist intermediary partner. This approach aims to ensure that funding remains aligned with the priorities and knowledge of those closest to the movements.
In addition, JRCT will continue to support grassroots work through its core grant programs. All current grantees under the pilot fund have been assured that their funding will proceed as scheduled. The organization acknowledged the contributions of the pilot’s staff and grant-making panel, whose work will influence future funding strategies.
