On 15 July 2025, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Greece to establish a new supply chain centre in Thessaloniki. This advanced logistics facility is designed to significantly enhance IOM’s global humanitarian response capabilities by enabling faster, more efficient, and sustainable delivery of aid to crisis-affected regions around the world.
Thessaloniki, strategically located at the intersection of Europe, the Balkans, and the Middle East, offers critical logistical and connectivity advantages. With its long-standing history in trade, industry, and cultural diversity, the city is well-positioned to support large-scale humanitarian operations. The new hub represents IOM’s intent to deepen collaboration with the Greek government and local partners while expanding its operational footprint.
The establishment of the centre comes amid a dramatic increase in IOM’s global procurement volume, which rose from USD 500 million in 2016 to USD 1.7 billion in 2024. With a global network of over 2,000 supply chain personnel, the new facility will play a vital role in supporting IOM’s expanding humanitarian logistics and procurement activities.
The Thessaloniki hub will focus on optimizing end-to-end supply chain functions—from procurement to warehousing and final distribution. Utilizing advanced technologies such as automation and real-time tracking systems, the centre will enhance innovation, transparency, and sustainability in humanitarian logistics. In addition to its operational role, the centre will act as a collaborative platform for testing innovative delivery models and improving coordination among international and local stakeholders.
This initiative marks a pivotal shift in humanitarian logistics strategy, aligning with IOM’s broader goal to create faster, more accountable, and human-rights-focused crisis response systems. The new supply chain hub underscores IOM’s commitment to delivering timely aid while fostering innovation and maintaining the dignity of affected populations.
