Crime Costs Latin America 3.4% of GDP—A Crisis Bigger Than Education

Dated: June 17, 2025

The Economic Impact of Crime and Violence in Latin America and the Caribbean

Crime and violence present a daunting challenge for Latin America and the Caribbean, costing the region a staggering 3.4% of its GDP. This financial burden is equivalent to a whopping 80% of the entire education budget. Such figures highlight the dire situation that impacts not only the economy but also the social fabric of the region.

Public Safety: A Growing Concern

More than half of the population in Latin America and the Caribbean reports feeling unsafe in their communities. This pervasive sense of insecurity affects daily life, stifling personal freedom and creating challenges in maintaining a stable environment for work and education. The fear of crime influences where people choose to live, how they engage with their surroundings, and even their mental health.

A Call to Action

In light of these pressing issues, it is essential for stakeholders, including government bodies, local organizations, and citizens, to explore effective strategies for enhancing citizen security. To address these challenges, we invite you to join our upcoming citizen security webinar on June 17. This event will shed light on innovative approaches that cities across the region are implementing to tackle crime and improve public safety.

By coming together to share insights and experiences, we can foster a more secure and prosperous future for all citizens in Latin America and the Caribbean. Together, we can work towards solutions that not only reduce crime but also rebuild trust in our communities. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of the conversation and contribute to a safer environment for everyone.
