Egyptian National Railways has signed four contracts with a consortium led by Alstom to modernize two strategic railway corridors in Egypt. The agreements have a combined value of approximately €690 million, with Alstom’s share estimated at around €300 million.
The modernization programme will cover the railway line connecting 6th of October City to Alexandria and the Belbes–10th of Ramadan corridor. These routes are important for passenger movement, freight transport, industrial connectivity and Egypt’s wider logistics network.
The project will be implemented in three phases and will include the deployment of next-generation digital railway systems. It will also upgrade telecommunications infrastructure, strengthen power supply systems, renovate civil engineering works and improve railway tracks.
On the 6th of October City–Alexandria corridor, the upgrades are expected to improve safety, service reliability and network capacity. The project is also expected to reduce travel times by about 80 minutes, improving passenger mobility along one of Egypt’s important transport routes.
The Belbes–10th of Ramadan railway line will focus on improving freight transportation and supporting industrial activity along Egypt’s eastern logistics corridor. Better rail freight services could help strengthen supply chains and improve access to industrial areas.
The contracts form part of Egypt’s broader railway transformation programme under its Vision 2030 strategy. The government sees rail infrastructure as a key element in improving national transport, reducing urban mobility challenges and connecting ports with agricultural and industrial hubs.
Egypt has been expanding investment across several transport modes as part of this long-term strategy. Major projects under development include a 2,000-kilometre high-speed rail network, monorail systems, skyways and light metro networks.
The Alstom-led rail upgrade programme reflects Egypt’s commitment to modernizing its transport infrastructure and improving logistics competitiveness. By upgrading railway systems, strengthening freight corridors and reducing travel times, the project is expected to support economic growth, industrial development and more efficient mobility across the country.
