Syria is moving toward long-term recovery through the European Union-funded Nexus Response Mechanism, an initiative implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) to connect humanitarian support with development and peacebuilding efforts.
After more than 14 years of conflict, communities across Syria continue to face major challenges. The programme aims to address immediate needs while creating pathways for sustainable development, stronger local governance, and economic recovery.
The four-year €31.5 million initiative focuses on improving livelihoods, strengthening local institutions, supporting civil society organizations, and enhancing infrastructure. It also works to create better conditions for displaced communities, returnees, and local populations.
Recent progress includes partnerships with municipal councils in Az-Zabadani, Anadan, and Haritan to improve public services and build local capacity. The programme has also assessed economic needs through community engagement, identifying agriculture, livestock, and construction as key sectors for future growth.
UNOPS is supporting the implementation of the Nexus Response Mechanism by promoting transparency, coordination, and collaboration between communities, local organizations, and public institutions. The approach prioritizes local ownership to ensure recovery efforts reflect the needs and priorities of Syrian communities.
By connecting emergency assistance with long-term development, the initiative aims to reduce vulnerabilities, strengthen resilience, and help communities rebuild a more stable and sustainable future.
