What began as a period of unemployment after graduation has turned into an inspiring entrepreneurial success story for 25-year-old Marko Guri, who is now helping put northern Albania on the tourism map through his growing business, Hidden Routes Albania.
After earning a degree in economics, Marko faced the challenge experienced by many young Albanians—limited job opportunities and months of unemployment. His turning point came in early 2026 when he enrolled in a Certified Tourist Guide course supported through the United Nations Joint Programme “Lifelong Empowerment and Protection in Albania” (LEAP). Funded by the Joint SDG Fund and implemented by UNDP, UNICEF, and the ILO, the programme was designed to help young people not engaged in employment, education, or training gain valuable skills and career opportunities.
The training provided Marko with professional qualifications, practical knowledge, and the confidence to pursue a career in tourism. Through the Youth Guarantee Programme, he gained hands-on experience with a local tourism agency before launching Hidden Routes Albania with his brother in June 2026.
Today, Marko guides visitors from across Europe and Asia through some of northern Albania’s most breathtaking destinations, including the mountain village of Theth, the crystal-clear Shala River, and the culturally rich Mirdita region. His tours highlight the area’s natural beauty, historical landmarks, and unique local traditions.
Marko’s journey reflects the broader impact of the LEAP programme, which aims to tackle youth unemployment and strengthen economic opportunities across Albania. The initiative has already provided vocational training to hundreds of young people, supported job placements, and helped vulnerable households access social and economic services.
United Nations Resident Coordinator Ingrid Macdonald praised the programme’s results, noting that investments in young people not only help them find employment but also empower them to create opportunities for others. Marko’s success story demonstrates how targeted training and support can transform potential into entrepreneurship.
As tourism continues to grow in Albania, Hidden Routes Albania is introducing travelers to lesser-known destinations while contributing to local economic development. For Marko, what started as a vocational training course has become a thriving business and a chance to showcase the hidden treasures of his homeland to the world.
