The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) and Sustainable Energy for All (SE for ALL) have launched a new strategic initiative aimed at accelerating electricity access across Africa under the ambitious Mission 300 program.
Announced in Nairobi, the Africa Energy Sector Technical Assistance Program (AESTAP–Mission 300 Phase I) will strengthen national energy delivery systems and support participating countries in implementing their National Energy Compacts. The initiative is designed to help achieve Mission 300’s goal of providing electricity access to an additional 300 million people across Africa by 2030.
Under the program, the African Development Bank Group will provide technical assistance to Compact Delivery and Monitoring Units (CDMUs), which serve as national coordination platforms responsible for overseeing energy sector reforms, monitoring progress, and resolving implementation challenges. SE for ALL will lead program execution over the next 12 months, focusing on stakeholder engagement, knowledge sharing, performance monitoring, and peer learning.
The initiative builds on the growing momentum of Mission 300, a joint effort between the African Development Bank Group and the World Bank Group to expand access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy across the continent.
Since its launch, Mission 300 has already connected more than 50 million people to electricity and supported 30 African countries in developing National Energy Compacts. These frameworks outline key energy targets, policy reforms, and investment priorities needed to achieve universal energy access by 2030.
Officials from both organizations emphasized that strong institutional capacity and effective coordination are critical to delivering large-scale energy projects and ensuring long-term success. The new program is expected to improve government implementation capabilities, accelerate energy investments, and support inclusive economic growth throughout Africa.
As electricity access remains a major development challenge in many parts of the continent, the partnership marks another significant step toward expanding energy infrastructure and improving the quality of life for millions of people.
