A $1 million donation from the Fitzsimmons Foundation will support planning and design work for a new sports and wellness initiative at Oglebay Park Resort.
The donation was made to the Oglebay Foundation as part of the “Forever Yours: The Campaign for an Enduring Oglebay” effort, which supports projects throughout the Oglebay park system.
Officials said the campaign includes planned improvements at Wheeling Park, the Oglebay Good Zoo, Wilson Lodge and other park programs and facilities.
According to organizers, the proposed Oglebay Sports Center would combine features of a community recreation center and athletic club.
Early plans call for indoor and outdoor spaces that could host youth sports leagues, adult fitness programs, recreational activities and community events.
Officials said the goal of the project is to expand year-round health, wellness and recreation opportunities for residents and visitors.
The Fitzsimmons family said the donation reflects the family’s long connection to Oglebay and the Wheeling community.
The gift also recognizes the leadership of Wheeling Park Commission Chair Greg McDermott.
Since its creation in 2007, the Fitzsimmons Foundation has contributed more than $4 million toward projects focused on education, mental health awareness, community spaces and support services across the Ohio Valley.
Additional information about the project, including the timeline and scope of the proposed sports center, is expected to be released as planning continues.
