Ulaanbaatar — May 29, 2026 — Agriculture remains the backbone of Mongolia’s economy, supporting nearly a third of the workforce and shaping rural livelihoods. Yet the sector faces mounting challenges from climate change, land degradation, and productivity constraints. To address these, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), in partnership with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and Japan, is driving investment through its Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF).
The programme combines blended finance, advisory support, and policy engagement to modernize agribusinesses, improve resilience, and expand sustainable lending to smallholder producers. A milestone achievement has been the pilot sustainable agriculture credit line with Khan Bank, embedding environmental considerations directly into agricultural lending.
So far, eight rural agribusiness projects have benefited from GEFF financing, enabling the purchase of energy‑efficient equipment such as harvesters, tractors, heat pumps, insulation materials, and four‑season greenhouses. These technologies, selected from the EBRD’s Green Technology Selector, have delivered measurable improvements in energy performance and environmental outcomes.
One standout example is Sansargoo, a Mongolian greenhouse company producing fresh fruit and vegetables while researching new varieties suited to the country’s climate. With GEFF support, Sansargoo insulated its winter greenhouse, improved heating systems, and extended its growing season. The results have been transformative, with income rising by 50% in 2024 and heat loss reduced by 30% in 2025. The company now plans to build a 2,000 m² smart greenhouse powered by renewable energy, increasing production fivefold and supporting environmental education in schools.
Collectively, GEFF agricultural projects in Mongolia have delivered around 750 MWh in annual energy savings and reduced CO2 emissions by 238 tonnes per year, equivalent to the carbon absorption of over 10,000 trees.
By aligning finance with climate‑smart technologies, the EBRD and its partners are helping Mongolia’s agriculture sector transition from traditional rangelands to modern greenhouses, ensuring resilience, productivity, and sustainability for the future.
