A major new funding opportunity has launched for agricultural researchers looking to improve animal health and tackle antibiotic resistance. The International Consortium for Antimicrobial Stewardship in Agriculture (ICASA) officially opened its 2026 Request for Applications (RFA). Created by the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR), the consortium is seeking innovative research proposals that deliver practical, real-world solutions for U.S. swine and beef producers. The ultimate goal is to promote the judicious use of antibiotics while elevating overall animal welfare.
Qualified research teams can request between $100,000 and $500,000 in ICASA funds per project. Because this initiative relies on public-private collaboration, applicants must secure matching funds equal to at least 40% of the total project budget to qualify for the grant. Since its inception in 2019, ICASA has invested $15 million across 31 research projects. These studies focus on targeted antibiotic treatments, enhanced transparency in food production, and sustainable management practices.
The push for antimicrobial stewardship has gained immense traction across the food supply chain. Following a major recommitment by FFAR, the consortium features an impressive lineup of returning and new participants. Major industry stakeholders backing the initiative include the Beef Alliance, McDonald’s Corporation, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, National Pork Board, Pipestone Veterinary Services, Wholestone Prestage, and Yum! Brands. This heavy industry backing ensures that winning research won’t just sit in a lab—it will be fast-tracked into practical use by major food brands and livestock producers.
The application process follows a multi-stage timeline throughout the summer and fall. Interested researchers must submit their initial preapplications by 5:00 p.m. EDT on June 10, 2026. Following a review process, meritorious applicants will receive invitations on July 15, 2026, to submit their full applications, which will be due by September 2, 2026. To help applicants navigate the research priorities and submission guidelines, FFAR is hosting an informational webinar at 1:00 p.m. EDT on May 26, 2026. Registration is required to attend the live session. Complete details on research priorities and application portals are available directly on the official FFAR website.
