Slovenia is hosting the third International Forum for Action on Sustainable Beekeeping and Pollination on World Bee Day, bringing together international organizations, government agencies, researchers, and beekeeping associations. Organized with FAO and Apimondia, the event highlights the crucial role of bees and other pollinators in food security, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience. Participants emphasized that sustainable beekeeping can reduce poverty, improve nutrition, and promote social inclusion while strengthening agricultural stability.
The forum addressed the growing threats to pollinators, including habitat loss, intensive farming, climate change, agrochemical use, and invasive species. Under the theme “Science, innovation and policy actions for a more sustainable future,” the event provided a platform for sharing expertise, showcasing innovations, and discussing practical steps for protecting pollinators and advancing sustainable beekeeping. Slovenian officials highlighted the country’s rich beekeeping tradition and commitment to modern solutions, research, and international cooperation.
Slovenia’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has carried out over 300 bee-related projects worldwide to promote expertise and raise awareness. FAO representatives stressed that protecting pollinators is a shared responsibility requiring collective action. Apimondia underscored the urgency of addressing challenges such as pesticides, climate change, and habitat loss, calling on individuals to contribute to pollinator preservation.
The forum also featured a live connection from Rome, where FAO inaugurated a special exhibition in celebration of World Bee Day. Around 100 participants engaged in discussions on honey quality, traceability, origin labelling, and transparency to build consumer confidence.
This year’s forum builds on previous gatherings in Slovenia and Ethiopia, with key achievements including identifying priorities for sustainable beekeeping, strengthening international cooperation, and advancing the establishment of a Global Pollinator Platform. The event reinforces the importance of innovative approaches and collective action to protect pollinators and ensure sustainable use of natural resources for future generations.
