On 20 November 2025, Ireland officially launched its campaign for membership of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term. The launch event took place at the United Nations in New York and included an exhibition titled “Drawing Hope: Children’s Art for Peace,” showcasing artwork by children from eight countries, including Ireland.
The launch builds on Ireland’s previously announced HRC thematic priorities, introduced in September during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week. These priorities focus on promoting and protecting civil society space and human rights defenders, advancing women’s rights and gender equality, safeguarding the rights of LGBTIQ+ persons, supporting the right to food, and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities in conflict situations.
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Helen McEntee TD, emphasized Ireland’s commitment to being a consistent advocate for human rights globally. She highlighted the importance of supporting the most vulnerable, including those affected by conflict and crisis, and reaffirmed Ireland’s dedication to the multilateral system and the United Nations, emphasizing the equal importance of peace and security, sustainable development, and human rights.
The election for membership in the Human Rights Council is scheduled for October 2026. If successful, Ireland’s three-year term will commence in January 2027, allowing the country to continue advocating for human rights and supporting defenders worldwide.
