UNESCO has announced the winners of the 7th edition of the Youth Eyes on the Silk Roads International Photo Contest, organized under the UNESCO Silk Roads Programme. This year’s theme, “Women, Guardians of Silk Roads Heritage”, highlighted the critical role women play in safeguarding and passing down cultural traditions along the historic trade routes. The contest, held from May 26 to August 5, 2025, attracted participants from 85 countries. Submissions were reviewed by an International Selection Committee of experts, who chose winners across two age categories.
In the 14–17 age group, the first prize went to Yitian Zhang from China for capturing the bond between a Tibetan grandmother and granddaughter, symbolizing the intergenerational transfer of culture and faith. The second prize was awarded to Manizha Pulodi of Tajikistan for a photo showing the teaching of suzani embroidery, while third prize went to Minh Anh Nguyễn from Viet Nam, who highlighted the vibrant mat-weaving traditions of An Cư village.
In the 18–25 age group, first prize was awarded to Farbod Bavehie of Iran for his portrayal of a woman on horseback during Nowruz festivities, reflecting the continuity of cultural traditions. The second prize went to Ahsanul Haque Nayem of Bangladesh, whose work documented women drying paddy using traditional methods, while third prize went to Ahmad Fahriyadi of Indonesia for his photo of women sustaining the Lok Baintan floating market, a centuries-old tradition.
Honourable mentions were also awarded in both categories. In the younger group, Sona Vardanyan of Armenia was recognized for her image of a young woman working on embroidery while wearing traditional Armenian attire. In the older category, Morsal Hamidi of Afghanistan/France was acknowledged for a photo of an Afghan musician surrounded by cultural craftsmanship, and Nay Thurein of Myanmar for showcasing the artistry of crafting traditional Pathein umbrellas.
The winning photos, along with other outstanding entries, will be featured in the upcoming album Youth Lens on the Silk Roads and may also be included in future exhibitions. UNESCO congratulated all winners and participants for their creativity and dedication in celebrating the living heritage of the Silk Roads.
