The Sustainable Communities through Women‘s Empowerment Project, Phase II, in Moldova aims to enhance gender climate resilience by integrating gender considerations into climate policies, empowering women as climate action leaders, and promoting gender-sensitive climate solutions. Aligned with national priorities and the National Development Strategy “Moldova 2030”, the project also supports gender equality promotion and energy-related objectives. Funded by Sweden and Norway, and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) from August 2024 to August 2028, the project aims to increase the resilience of 20 partner communities through climate change adaptation and greenhouse gas emission reduction initiatives.
The project seeks to achieve goals such as integrating gender-sensitive climate adaptation measures into development planning, implementing gender-sensitive climate change mitigation strategies, and establishing public-private partnerships to enhance local resilience to climate change. Results expected from the project include strengthening the capacity of authorities to address climate action with a gender perspective, developing women’s leadership in climate action, supporting climate-smart solutions led by women, and raising awareness about climate change among the public.
Funding for the project will support selected communities in developing/updating Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans, with different levels of support available for communities, women agricultural producers, and economically active women at the household level. Eligible applicants include local authorities throughout Moldova, including those on the left bank of the Dniester River. The competition targets communities with existing plans that need updating, as well as those interested in starting the development process. More information is available on the UNDP Moldova website.
