The Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study is inviting applications for the Iso Lomso Fellowship Program, which translates to ‘the eye of tomorrow’ in isiXhosa, emphasizing a forward-looking approach. This program targets African scholars who have obtained a doctoral degree in the past seven years and are currently affiliated with a university or research institution in Africa. Applicants should have a developed research program and have completed a post-doctoral fellowship or similar program.
Fellows selected for the program will benefit from various opportunities, including a three-year attachment to STIAS to work on a long-term research project and the chance to spend time at partner institutions abroad. Additionally, funding is available for attending conferences, organizing workshops, and providing lecturer replacement subsidies for the fellow’s home institution during residency periods.
The Iso Lomso fellowship covers various costs for fellows during their residency at STIAS, such as travel expenses, accommodation, stipend for living costs, access to facilities, and participation in the institute’s programs and events. Eligibility criteria include being a national of an African country, holding a doctoral degree obtained after 2017, and having plans to start the residency at STIAS in 2026.
Applications will be evaluated based on academic excellence, project innovation, interdisciplinary aspects, relevance to African scholarship, and feasibility of the research plan. Consideration will also be given to gender representation, diversity, and previous research experience during the selection process. Interested candidates must submit an application form along with a cover letter, research proposal, doctoral certificate, letters of support, and recommendation letters.
