IDRC and UNFPA are collaborating to host an online event titled “Civil registration, vital statistics and legal identity in poly-crisis: Lessons learned,” led by Sana Naffa from IDRC. The session will explore the importance of universal legal identity achieved through accessible civil registration and identity management throughout one’s life as a crucial aspect of sustainable development. Despite this, a significant number of births, deaths, and marriages worldwide go unregistered. To combat this issue of “invisibility,” initiatives to strengthen systems have been expanded through the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS), initially established by IDRC and now further developed with the help of UNFPA. The event will provide updates on efforts to include marginalized populations in health and data systems and promote inclusive societies through universal legal identity. It will also feature the progress of country-based initiatives supported by the Centre of Excellence in Colombia, Indonesia, Guatemala, Uganda, and Ghana. The agenda includes presentations on integrating gender perspectives in CRVS systems, improving birth registration for Indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities in Colombia, efforts to tackle child marriage and enhance birth and marriage registration in Indonesia, Guatemala, and Uganda, and utilizing vital statistics for more inclusive public policy and programs in Ghana. The event is scheduled for Sunday, October 27, 2024, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. PDT and will be held virtually.
