The Queen Elizabeth Trust has been established as a new UK-wide independent charity to honour the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth and her lifelong dedication to public service. His Majesty The King will serve as Royal Patron of the Trust, which aims to carry forward the late Queen’s values by strengthening community life and supporting shared spaces across the United Kingdom.
The Trust is part of a broader set of memorial initiatives, alongside a national memorial in St James’s Park and a digital memorial, all designed to honour the Queen’s legacy at local, national, and global levels. Inspired by her belief that “everyone is our neighbour,” the Trust will work directly with communities to fund and support the restoration and development of shared spaces that bring people together and strengthen local belonging.
To support its mission, the Government has provided a £40 million endowment to help launch the Trust and enable investment in community-focused projects. These initiatives may include transforming underused buildings and green spaces into neighbourhood hubs, as well as supporting local training and skills development so communities can better organise and host events that enhance social connection.
The initiative continues a tradition of “living memorials” that deliver public benefit, similar to historical projects like King George V Playing Fields, which preserve recreational spaces for public use. The Queen Elizabeth Trust is intended to ensure that the late Queen is remembered not only through symbolism but through tangible improvements that strengthen everyday community life.
Leadership figures have emphasized the importance of the Trust in addressing social disconnection and rebuilding local cohesion. The Chair highlighted the potential of shared spaces to create opportunities, foster relationships, and build pride in local communities, while also noting the ambition to expand impact by attracting further support and working closely with communities on the ground.
The Trust was developed following recommendations from the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee after extensive consultations over two years with communities, experts, charities, and policymakers across the UK. Further details on funding criteria and project selection are expected to be released in the coming months as the Trust begins its work to support community regeneration nationwide.
