Auckland Council is investing an additional $286,106 in arts and culture across Tāmaki Makaurau through its latest round of Regional Arts and Culture grants. Approved by the Community Committee on 16 April, the funding will support 14 creative projects with grants ranging from $5,000 to $50,000, enabling a wide range of activities including dance, music, performance, poetry, and storytelling across the region.
The funding is aimed at both emerging and established arts groups, with a focus on strengthening participation and expanding access to cultural experiences. Community Committee chair Councillor Julie Fairey noted that strong demand for the grants reflects a thriving creative sector in Auckland. She added that, given limited funding, priority has been given to projects that can attract wider audiences across Tāmaki Makaurau and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the arts community.
Auckland Council’s General Manager of Community Wellbeing, Kenneth Aiolupotea, highlighted that successful applicants demonstrated clear plans to engage new audiences and reduce barriers to participation in arts and culture. He emphasized that community-led initiatives, supported by volunteers and local resources, are key to achieving meaningful social and cultural outcomes that might not otherwise be possible.
This latest round of funding brings the council’s total investment in the Regional Arts and Culture grants programme to over $1.35 million this financial year. The programme aligns with Toi Whītiki, Auckland’s Arts and Culture Strategic Action Plan, and continues to generate strong public engagement, with more than 600,000 people participating in funded projects in the previous round.
Several well-known organisations, including the Manukau Orchestral Society, Silo Theatre, Te Pou Theatre Trust, and Basement Theatre Trust, are among those receiving multi-year support. At the end of the funding period, recipients will report on outcomes to the Community Committee in mid-2027. The next funding round will open on 1 May 2026 and close on 12 July 2026.
