Islamic Relief marked Orphan Day in the Islamic World, observed on the 15th day of Ramadan, with a series of global activities to celebrate and support orphaned children and their families. The events aimed to bring communities together, highlight the importance of education and care for vulnerable children, and reaffirm the shared responsibility of ensuring access to food, shelter, healthcare, and learning opportunities.
In Nairobi, Kenya, Islamic Relief hosted a large community iftar attended by over 400 orphaned children. The gathering strengthened a sense of belonging and community support for the children and their families during the holy month of Ramadan.
In Aleppo, Syria, the organisation held a special iftar for orphans and their guardians, featuring children performing hymns, reciting poems, and delivering speeches on the significance of Ramadan and the sacrifices of their caregivers. The event also celebrated achievements of orphans and mothers, recognising academic excellence, entrepreneurial initiatives, Qur’an memorisation, and creative talents. Handmade products created by children were auctioned or sold, with proceeds going directly to them.
In Sunamganj, Bangladesh, Islamic Relief combined an iftar gathering with meetings involving local officials, school leaders, and community representatives to discuss improving support systems for orphaned children. The discussions focused on enhancing access to education, empowering orphans, and promoting collaboration between government, humanitarian organisations, and society to ensure social protection and long-term security.
Through these initiatives, Islamic Relief reaffirmed its commitment to supporting orphaned children not only by addressing immediate needs but also by investing in education, livelihoods, and opportunities that enable children to thrive. Supporting orphans has been central to Islamic Relief’s mission to alleviate poverty worldwide for over 40 years.
