On 13 March 2026, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), supported by the Government of Germany through KfW Development Bank and in partnership with the Government of Balochistan, handed over 118 climate-resilient homes to families affected by the 2022 floods in Hanna-Urak, Quetta District. The new houses provide safer shelter, helping communities rebuild their lives while enhancing resilience against future climate shocks.
The handover ceremony was attended by officials from Germany and the Government of Balochistan, including Mr. Mir Murad Baloch, Honorary Consul of Germany, Mr. Zeeshan Javed, Secretary of the Planning and Development Department, Ms. Batool Asadi, Chief of Foreign Aid, and Mr. Naveed Ahmed Sheikh, Director Planning & Coordination at the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, alongside local authorities and community representatives.
This housing initiative is part of the Flood Reconstruction and Coordination Programme, through which UNDP is supporting the construction of 700 climate- and disaster-resilient homes across Balochistan. With the latest handover, 158 homes have been completed and delivered to families, while the remaining houses are expected to be finished in the coming months. The homes feature raised plinths to reduce flood risk, reinforced structures for improved seismic safety, and enhanced ventilation to adapt to rising temperatures.
Dr. Samuel Rizk, Resident Representative of UNDP Pakistan, highlighted the importance of strong partnerships in supporting communities to recover from climate disasters. He emphasized that the collaboration between UNDP, the Government of Germany, and the Government of Balochistan is aimed at helping flood-affected families rebuild safer homes while strengthening long-term resilience to climate impacts.
Beyond housing reconstruction, the Programme also focuses on resilient community infrastructure, benefiting thousands of people in Hanna-Urak and contributing to safer, stronger, and more resilient communities across Balochistan.
