The Maryland Department of Agriculture and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources have been awarded a $100,000 grant from the National Park Service Chesapeake Gateways to support AgriTrails, a program highlighting Maryland’s agricultural and natural resources. The initiative aims to connect agriculture and aquaculture businesses with outdoor recreation opportunities on public lands and State Parks, promoting awareness, appreciation, and economic vitality in Chesapeake Bay Gateway communities. AgriTrails will guide Marylanders and visitors on a journey of “Maryland Grown Food and Fun,” combining local flavors with outdoor experiences.
Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks emphasized that the grant provides an opportunity to showcase the state’s agricultural resources while promoting outdoor recreation. Programs such as Sip & Shuck highlight Maryland’s rich agricultural products, pairing local food with recreational activities to engage residents and visitors. The state plays a crucial role in protecting natural resources, supporting local agriculture and aquaculture, and expanding equitable access to nature. With over half of the Chesapeake Bay within its borders, Maryland supports numerous working waterfronts and communities, including over 280 dairy farms, 475 commercial shellfish operations, 800 licensed oyster harvesters, and 500,000 acres of public land.
Sandi Olek, Director of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ Office of Outdoor Recreation, highlighted how programs like Sip & Shuck connect Maryland-grown food with outdoor adventures, reflecting the cultural, economic, and environmental significance of oysters and other local products. AgriTrails showcases the state’s outdoor landscapes while linking them to local farms and producers, fostering a deeper understanding of Maryland’s natural, cultural, and agricultural heritage.
National Park Service Chesapeake Gateways grants support the Chesapeake Bay Initiative Act of 1998 and aim to help people discover, experience, and connect with Chesapeake Bay communities, landscapes, and rivers. The AgriTrails grant will promote agritourism and outdoor recreation, encouraging Bay-friendly consumer practices, public engagement, and support for local agribusinesses.
In 2026, the AgriTrails program will feature three trails: Sip & Shuck (February–March), Maryland’s Best Ice Cream Trail (Memorial Day–Labor Day), and Bikes & Brews (September–November). Participants can use the Bandwango platform via Maryland’s Best website to explore the trails, check in at locations, and win prizes. Sip & Shuck, the first trail, begins February 1 and pairs breweries, restaurants, and distilleries using local oysters and ingredients with nearby outdoor recreation activities.
